Anglo Indian ivory work box Visagapatam
An Anglo Indian ivory veneered work box , its hinged cover in cavetto moulding style and enclosing an inner compartment accessed from the interior. The box contains four lidded, four open compartments and a secret drawer.The ivory is beautifully decorated with the typical Visagapatam incised black pen floral motifs and ring tamed lion handles- the whole raised on hairy paw feet. A paper label on the base reads : " T. Webb, 5 Mornington Terrace, Wanstead, watchmakers , Jewellers and C..." A similar box in the Victoria & Albert Museum , London is illustrated in A. Jaffer's book " Furniture from British India and Ceylon", London 2001. page 208, fig. 52. Age: C. 1820. Size; 10 inches (26cm) long. condition: very good indeed, in unrestored original condition. There are age-related hairlines to the right side of the box and the top scroll( see image 3 ) and a small area of veneer redone to the right of the secret drawer on the front image5) We can obtain CITES Export Licence, if necessary (2/3 weeks).
