An Exceptional Vietnamese Solid Ivory Opium Water Pipe
This Pipe is of the cylindrical type and is fashioned from a solid piece of ivory. The polychrome art work is exceptional very detailed and incised into the ivory using a paint that includes metal in its base. The overall theme is longevity. At the front are an ancient scholar, bats, peach, deer, and children known as “golden bo”. Around the remainder of the body is a mandarin holding a ruhi, the symbol of authority, a crane, an image of Guan Yin, the goddess of mercy, a sage, more children and pine branches. The metal work is silvered copper and features dragons in relief. The bottom is completely covered with the same metal. Ivory shows some wear of use commensurate with age.
