Chinese Cultural Revolution Poster - Serve the People
This rare Chinese late Cultural Revolution poster shows the title of "Serve the People wholeheartedly" with a smiling female villager, an elder woman and a a child holding a Chinese lantern. During the late Cultural Revolution phase, the government wanted to encourage people to be selfless, and therefore they had erected Lei Feng as a national hero, and the motto was to serve the people. This poster was a timely reflection of the political environment of the period. Lots of traditional motifs were employed in this poster, which reflects a change in people's desire to return to traditional values and longing for a stable and peaceful society. During the Cultural Revolution, production was halted and people were going hungry in many villages. The strong women and chubby child represent the artist's wish to depict a healthy and prosperous farming society, which was hard to find during the Cultural Revolution. Blossoming plum flower, Fish and lantern represents good luck and happiness, again are motifs that symbolize a prosperous society that the millions of Chinese farmers were longing for. Published by People's Art publishing house, created by Shen Daci, 0.16 yuan. 30" x 20".
