This is a very attractive antique straw work needle case C. mid 1800's. The art of straw work was originally done by Napoleonic prisoners of war to improve their living conditions. This needle case box is made of cut thin pieces of straw affixed to a pressed paper shape and dyed in vivid colors with a geometric pattern design. On one end of the case is the design of a rose. This is a very sweet sewing measuring tape in the shape of a small barrel. Done in vegetable ivory, with a stanhope in the stem of the winding mechanism. There are four separate scenes with the title - “Bagnoles de L'Orne”, below them. The tape has its original pull ring and is marked with printed numbers in centimeters. A very unusual piece.

This is a truly wonderful gilded copper chatelaine that dates from approximately the early to mid 18th century. The chatelaine hook has a cherub face at the top, two different faces decorating the scrolled sides, and a romantic scene in the middle. Attached to the decorated hook by chains are two small containers that are empty, but were probably for thimbles or sweetmeats. The design again is elaborate, and the containers have a push button locking mechanism. ...click for details
