This is a late eighteenth century or early nineteenth century piece, very likely by Josiah Wedgwood , an anti slavery campaigner who began to reproduce the figure of an African slave in chains on fashionable jasperware medallions and seals. Was originally adopted as the seal of the Society for the Abolition of Slavery in England in the 1780s
The piece is unmarked, and is made of black basalt with a very detailed intaglio of the African slave in chains with the inscription AM I NOT A MAN and A BROTHER, which is the anti slavery motto.
The piece has exceptional detail for a fairly small item and it is a very unusual piece.
Condition: Fine Size: Length- 1 inch. Oval face- 7/8 X 5/8 inch. |
