This is a really delightful Japanese monkey nodder holding a pipe in one paw and a kagamibuta and tobacco pouch in the other. Material appears to be earthenware, beautifully decorated with textured as well as glazed areas. The short kimono is glazed, and decorated with bats, which I believe represents prosperity in Japanese folklore, and the glazed tobacco pouch has a series of Japanese characters on the front. A very realistic piece done in great detail, and I would believe dates to the early 1900’s. Condition: Being hand made, the piece has very minor imperfections, but no cracks or chips. Head nods perfectly. Colors are beautiful. Size: Height- 6 inches. Width- 4 7/8 inches. |
