This is truly a masterpiece of Japanese lacquer. Cannot find a signature on the piece, but the workmanship must be distinctive to experts in the field. The design is of a stylized water scene with various branches and blossoms in variegated gold and gray colors. There are five medallions, or mons, on the body, as well as two on the lid. The interior is a rich red lacquer color, and there was originally a small oval label on the bottom, which said c. 1750, but has come off over time leaving a small darker patch. Ewer stands on three feet. Exquisite workmanship and colors. Condition: Tiny area of professional restoration on the red lacquer inside lip of the spout. A few minor lacquer loss areas, but overall in very good condition. Size: height- 4.5 inches. diameter – 4 inches. diameter including spout – 6 inches, |
