This lovely antique porcelain ink well is designed to resemble ivory, and is completely covered with Japanese figures and scenes. Each side is in relief with a different scene of samurai, as well as a crane in flight. The scenes are very elaborate, and different from each other, with each fitting beautifully into each panel. The same applies to the top, where the design works in the round. The overall shape is square with tapered corners, and the piece has a metal collar and hinge. Bottom has a hole, but the inkwell insert is missing. Color of the porcelain has made to resemble that of ancient ivory. No markings, and I am not aware of the maker, but I do know that this is a magnificent porcelain item. Condition: Fine. No cracks or chips. Hinge works perfectly. Insert missing as previously noted. Size: Height- 4 ½ inches. Each side 2 ½ inches. |
