I have not seen a Scottish gold and agate mourning brooch like this before. The design is of a shield with a crown on top, and the body has been tested as 9 kt gold. There is a registration mark on the back, but the date mark area is worn and difficult to read. Carnelian, green, and moss agate stones are on the face of the shield, and natural pearls are inset on the top of the crown, which is an unusual feature in itself. In the center of the open face shield is a memorial hair insert with a lock of hair with a few small pearls and twist of gold wire.
A very attractive and unique Scottish brooch. Condition: Very good. Under magnification there is a bit rubbing to the glass face of the mourning insert. |
