Rare + Rarified ...
What Peruvian artisans may have lacked in the refined silver making seen in jewelry from Mexico, they more than made up for with their extraordinary design ingenuity and innovative imaginations. Most probably dating to the 1940's or '50s, this fascinating bracelet is composed of eight convex panels interconnected by pin hinges. Handwrought in .900 silver, it not only boasts astonishing and meticulous miniature openwork, but it is also two-sided, displaying motifs on both the front {outside} and back {inside} of the piece. The panel fronts consist of a storyteller theme, mixing scenes of Peruvians in their everyday lives with pre-Hispanic imagery. As an added flourish, the center of each panel is embellished with a square cabochon of azurmalachite, whose vibrancy accentuates the silverwork. The panel backs display a repeating Inca icon in the middle of each panel {a decorative counterpoint to the gemstone cabs}. And there is also a mythological figure enhancing the exterior of the box clasp. With its fabulous cutwork and attention to detail overall—even to the wonderfully incised push button on the v-spring clasp—the bracelet is an astonishing work of wearable art, as well as a singular showpiece for any vintage Latin American silver collection. HALLMARKS: 900. DIMENSIONS: 7-3/8" x 5/16". WEIGHT: 19.3 grams. CONDITION: Excellent to superior vintage condition, including a fully functioning push button v-spring and box clasp, made more secure with a locking safety catch. |
