Primitive ~ Modernist ~ Timeless ...
Boasting both pre-Hispanic and modernist attributes—greatly evocative of silverworks by renowned artist Oswaldo Guayasamin—this Ecuadorian brooch pendant dates to the 1950's or '60s. Masterfully handwrought in .900 silver and boasting a sharply angular, geometric form, it depicts an anthropomorphic Inca icon, perhaps a tumi god. The figure is composed of a heavily chased, textural body and semi-circular headdress to which highly polished silver components have been surmounted. These detailed elements—including fabulous little spheres for eyes—all have been meticulously shaped and cut, with most of them deeply incised and enhanced by oxidizing. As a dazzling final flourish, the artisan has accented the piece with a vertical row of three turquoise, poured glass cabochons, set in elevated, silver bezel mounts. The design's overall effect is boldly arresting and dimensional, making it a wearable art show-stopper, as well as a distinctive collectible for aficionados of mid-20th-Century Latin American silver. HALLMARKS: ECUADOR; 900. DIMENSIONS: 2-5/8" x 1-1/2". WEIGHT: 10.3 grams. CONDITION: Excellent to superior vintage condition, including an early but secure, rollover-locking clasp {the pin stem is a little wavy}, as well as a generous hidden bail. |
