“Pulsera de Cocos”…
“Coco’s Bracelet.” That is how William Spratling referred to the silver bracelet that was created by Justo “Coco” Castillo in the mid-1930’s, when Castillo was a silversmith in Spratling’s taller. Now, offered for your consideration is an exquisite interpretation of the Coco design, in a stunning and elegant double-strand version, dating from the 1930’s or ’40s. The original bracelet’s motif is comprised of seven stations, each composed of two imposing silver spheres and foliate-style straps, which are interlinked by large, open ring connectors. Here, the same motif is repeated in a second strand, with the two bracelets soldered together at the top and bottom of the inside spheres. The connecting rings also have been given a more detailed appearance, crafted in a graceful, twisted silver rope ornamentation. Most impressive in both design and dimension, this is a refined and sophisticated jewelry piece, as well as a distinctive addition to every pre-Eagle Mexican silver collection. HALLMARKS: MADE IN MEXICO. {Though not marked, the bracelet tests for a high silver content—.925 sterling or better.} DIMENSIONS: 7-1/2” in length {including broad J-hook and bar closure} x 1-3/4”. WEIGHT: 66.3 grams. CONDITION: Excellent vintage condition. There are twenty-eight silver balls in total and I see only two that have dimples, which is remarkable considering the age of the piece. BOOK PIECE: This bracelet is featured on page 183 of Leslie Pina’s Mexican Silver Jewelry Details. |
