A spectacular centerpiece for any advanced Mexican silver or Los Castillo collection, this choker necklace is astonishing in so many ways ... MAKER: Handwrought by Los Castillo, one of the most celebrated and successful Taxco silver-making workshops of Mexico’s silver renaissance. RARITY: Assigned #187 {a considerably early inventory number for the taller}, it is a design I have not found referenced, nor ever seen on the market. VINTAGE: The linear, blocked letter hallmark—as well as the low inventory number—indicate that this piece was created circa 1940-1945. DESIGN: The sterling silver choker necklace is composed of twenty-two alar or wing-like elements, connected by O-rings, which set the stage for a striking, large centerpiece. This centerpiece, with its splendid repousse and detailing, appears to depict a highly stylized, almost Picassoesque cubist bull’s head, an iconic Mexican motif. TECHNIQUE: The entire dramatic work is a marvel of hollow répoussage. Sinuous and sensuous, the high relief repoussé silver is further defined by oxidizing within the deep recesses. WEIGHT: An impressive and substantial 90.4 grams. DIMENSIONS: The necklace is approximately 15” in length, with the inner circumference approximately 13”. Each alar component measures 1-3/8” wide x 3/4” tall. The pendant measures 2-3/8” wide x 1-1/4” tall. HALLMARK: LOS CASTILLO, TAXCO, STERLING, MEXICO, 187 {block letters in line}. CONDITION: Collector display quality. |
