Sumptuous ~ Splendorous ~ Superlative …
Boasting the creative genius and silver making expertise of such Mexican masters as Salvador Vaca Teran, this imposing, handwrought brooch is a showstopper. Circular in form and slightly domed, it depicts two highly stylized, pre-Hispanic figurals, set against a deeply patinated or scorched background. The fantastic, mirror image, silver figures appear to be anthropomorphic mythological icons. They are executed in low relief repoussage and mounted on pins to the patinated base, giving them a splendid multi-dimensional effect. The silver work itself is a breathtaking fusion of cutwork, punch work, deep incising enhanced by oxidizing, and decorative silver appliqués in the form of repoussé dimple and dimpled dot elements. The entire motif is framed by a high, polished silver surround and the pinback is fitted with a secure rollover clasp. An absolutely astounding work, this brooch is most likely one-of-a-kind and makes for a prized display piece in any serious Mexican silver collection. HALLMARKS: V, inside a C; STERLING, 925; SILVER, MADE IN MEXICO; Eagle assay #1 {delineated}. The early Eagle stamp indicates that this piece dates 1948-1955. This hallmark is cited in Bille Hougart’s The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks. DIMENSIONS: 2-7/8” in diameter. WEIGHT: 40.5 grams. CONDITION: With only negligible wear to the patinated base, the brooch is in superior vintage condition, definitely collector quality. BOOK PIECE: This work is featured on pages 108-109 in Mexican Silver Jewelry Details by Leslie Pina. |
