ˇEs fabuloso! …
Dating to the 1930’s or ’40s, this impressive silver bracelet is an extraordinary example of jewelry making from the nascent years of Mexico’s silver renaissance. It is composed of five imposing, slightly convex, oblong panels interconnected by pin hinges. Each panel boasts as its centerpiece a pre-Columbian design facemask, marvelously hand carved in a vivid green stone, possibly calcite or chrysoprase. The gemstone facemasks themselves show a striking translucence and are set within a framework comprised of hand-crimped, scalloped silver prongs. The piece de resistance, however, are the singular borders that accentuate each stone: three-dimensional, individually applied silver flower blossoms and beads that create a series of astonishing garland or wreath surrounds. Demonstrating both breathtaking creativity and highly skilled, handwrought construction, this bracelet makes for show-stopping wearable art, as well as a rare and rarified early Mexican silver collectible. Hallmarks: MADE IN MEXICO; SILVER. Dimensions: 7-1/4” x 1-1/2”. Weight: 87.6 grams. Condition: Excellent vintage condition. Two of the gemstones show small areas of roughness, but none is cracked or otherwise flawed. The silverwork is in superlative shape, as are the push button v-spring and box clasp {each element hinged to the body of the bracelet}. There is also an attached safety chain. |
