1950s Mexican Silver Azurite Face Brooch ~ Book Piece
Lavish lapidary ~ Splendid silverwork ~ Majestic motif! … Hailing from the late 1950’s to early ’60s, this spectacular brooch is a marvel of pre-Columbian design and expert Taxco craftsmanship. It depicts the reposed stone face of an Aztec or Maya priest or dignitary costumed in elaborate silver headdress, earrings, and neck ornamentation with feather pendants. The silver work boasts intricate flat chasing that has been oxidized to dramatically enhance the definition. The earrings are large, soldered O-rings that dangle freely from the headdress and the three feather drops hang from attached soldered O-rings. The piece de resistance, however, is the remarkable stone face itself. Composed of azurite, the magnificent, bezel-set face is carved in extraordinary detail—its lifelike, highly sculptural features at once graceful and bold. Simply breathtaking!
