“The Spratling of Peru” …
Florentine-born, Graziella Laffi lived and worked in Peru during the 1950’s, producing singular and stunning silver pieces in both modern and pre-Columbian forms. Most aficionados believe that her creations rival the masterworks that came out of Mexico. She is one of today’s hottest collectibles in the field. At once pre-Columbian and modernist in design, this extraordinary brooch is deeply convex, with an elongated ovoid form. It boasts a splendidly rendered motif of two large water birds competing for a fish. The meticulously cut, stylized figurals are composed of sterling silver and they are brought vibrantly to life by an inset of striking, mottled enameling, in varying shades of cobalt blue, copper brown, black, and white. Laffi’s trademark, minimalist tool work adds superb detail and definition, and a slender, silver surround frames and finishes the work. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find Laffi enamel pieces, especially ones as impressive in size and superbly handwrought as this one. It makes for spectacular wearable art, as well as a distinguished addition to any serious Graziella Laffi collection. HALLMARKS: PERU, LAFFI, 925. DIMENSIONS: 2-1/2" x 1-1/4”. WEIGHT: 22.6 grams. CONDITION: Excellent vintage condition, definitely collector quality, including a secure, rollover-locking clasp. |
