¡Muy grandioso y sumtuous! …
This exceptionally rare silver brooch—magnificent in both design and dimension—hails from the nascent years of Mexico’s silver renaissance. Handwrought entirely en repoussé, it depicts the sensuous figural of one of the most ancient and important Aztec female deities, Xilonen, goddess of maize and fertility, and consort of the corn god, Centeotl. Evocative of the opulent relief carvings from pyramid friezes, the piece is done in superb high relief, imbuing it with a superlative sculptural presentation. Detail and definition are further accentuated by deep incising, as well as meticulous background stippling. Suitable for display in a museum showcase, this wearable art masterwork is a prized collectible for serious aficionados of pre-Eagle Mexican silver making. HALLMARKS: On surmounted, circular cartouche—MEXICO; SILVER. DIMENSIONS: 2-3/4” x 2-1/4”. WEIGHT: 37.4 grams. CONDITION: Dating to the 1930’s or ’40s, the brooch is in excellent to superior vintage condition, with only some negligible tool marks. The piece is fitted with an early but secure, rollover-locking clasp and considering its venerable age, its silver purity is most likely higher than .925. |
