Big, beautiful + breathtaking! …
Pre-Columbian cultures had a rich masking tradition, the most common dating from around 1200 B.C. Masks served a number of purposes, including those used for funerary rituals and various religious ceremonies. The imposing pendant on this fabulous Peruvian necklace takes its imagery from an iconic mask frequently seen in ancient Inca artwork. Crafted in .925 silver, the bold design of this centerpiece is at once primitive and modernist, with hand-rendered repoussé, robust etching, and heavy oxidizing that imbue it with dynamic definition and dimensionality. The pendant hangs by a pair of large, square bails that are hinged to the top of the mask at the back; and the mask is further embellished with vibrant, bezel-set, azurite cabochons, representing its solar disk earrings. The necklace itself is equally dramatic, composed of four different elements: a chain comprised of rectilinear, open links; a second chain made up of flat, narrow silver bars, incised with totemic figures and connected by fixed and floating O-rings; four azurite barrel ornaments with silver end caps, also connected by fixed and floating O-rings; and two tumi god figurals, intricately detailed and oxidized on both back and front, and connected by fixed and floating O-rings. The necklace closes with a push button v-spring and box clasp that is ornately incised with a glyphic design and made more secure with a locking safety catch. Simply sensational! HALLMARKS: 925 on back of pendant, as well as on clasp. DIMENSIONS: The necklace is 20-1/2” long. The mask pendant measures 2-1/8” x 1-3/8”. WEIGHT: 47.4 grams. CONDITION: Most probably dating to the 1950’s, the piece is in excellent to superior vintage condition, definitely collector quality. |
