A mid-century fad produces an exceptional collectible of timeless beauty …
The popularity of enamel on copper jewelry reached its peak in the late 1940’s and ’50s, with the proliferation of copper and enamel crafts kits. These projects required assembly of pre-cut copper parts, links, and clasps, and then hand painting one’s own enamel designs on the copper plates for firing. Though results varied with the talents of the hobbyist, some of the pieces produced were superb and worthy of a true studio artisan. Today, kit jewelry is hard to find and highly collectible. Imposing and impressive, this enamel on copper kit bracelet is composed of four large, convex panels, interlinked by pairs of brass connectors at the centers. The oblong panels are fully enameled in a stylized floral and foliate motif, set against a dramatic, metallic bronze ground. With a vibrant color palette that includes light teal blue, cobalt blue, lilac, green, and black, each panel’s pattern is slightly different, and boasts both opaque and spattered enamel effects. The piece is counter enameled in blue and white speckling. At once marvelously modernist and resplendently retro, this singular bracelet is for those who like their fashion statements big and bold, as well as for collectors of vintage American popular culture. MARKS/MAKER: Unmarked. DIMENSIONS: 6-1/2” x 1-5/8”. WEIGHT: 76.7 grams. CONDITION: Excellent vintage condition, including a secure foldover clasp and brass safety chain. BOOK REFERENCE: Copper kit bracelets are discussed on page 149 in Copper Art Jewelry: A Different Lustre by Matthew L. Burkholz and Linda Lichtenberg Kaplan. |
