“The Spratling of Peru” …
Florentine-born, Graziella Laffi lived and worked in Peru during the 1950’s, producing singular and stunning silver pieces in both modern and pre-Columbian forms. Most aficionados believe that her creations rival the masterworks that came out of Mexico. She is one of today’s hottest collectibles in the field. Boasting a motif with a pre-Columbian sensibility and a decidedly modernist panache, this exquisite figural pin is handwrought in sterling silver and enamel. It depicts a stylized lobster or crayfish, and its extraordinarily graceful and delicate lines accentuate the singular beauty of Laffi’s signature silver making—including meticulous cutwork, piercing, minimalist tool work, applied silver, and oxidizing. Accenting the creature’s eye with turquoise green enamel, and designing the pin with a deeply convex form, Laffi has created a piece of remarkable dimension, definition, and character. HALLMARKS: PERU, G. LAFFI, 925. DIMENSIONS: 1-3/4” x 1-5/8”. WEIGHT: 13.6 grams. CONDITION: Dating to the 1950’s, it is in excellent vintage condition. The pin stem is slightly wavy and rocks a bit, but the rollover-locking mechanism works securely. |
