“The Spratling of Peru” …
Florentine-born, Graziella Laffi lived and worked in Peru during the 1950’s, producing singular and stunning silver pieces in both modern and pre-Columbian forms. Most aficionados believe that her creations rival the masterworks that came out of Mexico. She is one of today’s hottest collectibles in the field. This outstanding figural brooch is a rare and rarified find for Laffi collectors and aficionados of vintage wearable art. The handwrought piece, depicting a gracefully stylized hummingbird, boasts a superb pre-Columbian motif, executed with Laffi’s signature modernist panache. The figural displays sublime cutwork {note the delicate, bent leg and long, slender beak}, its form further defined with only minimalist tooling. A feather section on the wing is composed of brilliant 18K gold and is surmounted to the silver body. The highly expressive golden eye, cut in a teardrop shape, is also 18K gold applied to the silver base. Singularly divine! HALLMARKS: PERU, G. LAFFI, 925, K18. DIMENSIONS: 2-1/4” x 1-3/4”. WEIGHT: 6.6 grams. CONDITION: Excellent vintage condition, including a secure rollover-locking clasp. |
