Exquisite + Exceptional …
Active in the 1960’s and ’70s, designer Carmen Beckmann owned a retail shop in her home in San Miguel de Allende. Her jewelry was of the finest quality and, since there were few master silversmiths in San Miguel, it is believed that most of it was crafted in Taxco. Today, her pieces are difficult to find and highly desirable. This necklace is a stunning example of the elegant artistry Beckmann brought to her work. Handwrought in sterling silver, it is composed of twenty-four, non-graduating spheres or balls. Each sphere has silver wire going through its center, with terminating loops at each end that interconnect to the next balls. Boasting a warm and radiant patina, this is a sumptuous and sophisticated jewelry piece—eminently wearable and collectible. HALLMARKS: Marked on the J-hook—BECKMANN; STERLING; MEXICO. Carmen Beckmann is featured in Bille Hougart’s The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks. DIMENSIONS: 16-3/4” long. Each sphere measures approximately 12mm. WEIGHT: 43 grams. CONDITION: Excellent vintage condition, definitely collector quality. The necklace is fitted with a broad J-hook clasp and stirrup-shaped, silver wire ring. BOOK REFERENCE: Carmen Beckmann is featured on page 233, in Mexican Silver, Edition 4 by Penny Chittim Morrill and Carole A. Berk. |
