Resplendent repoussé ~ Dramatic design ~ Exquisite execution! …
Established in 1903 by two American brothers, Sanborn’s department store remains a successful corporate business today. Known mostly for its superb sterling silver tableware and decorative objects, the Mexico City shop on rare occasion offered high-end jewelry, designed by master silversmiths. This sumptuous and elegant, open cuff bracelet is just such a piece—made all the more extraordinary because it was produced very early, prior to 1931. At once a stunning work of understated beauty and a masterful example of meticulous répoussage and chasing, the handwrought cuff boasts bold dimensionality and detail, while remaining graciously feminine. It is a rare and rarified piece of wearable art, as well as a distinguished collectible from one of the prestigious contributors to Mexico’s silver renaissance. HALLMARKS: SANBORNS; MEXICO; STERLING. Sanborn’s began using a very distinctive three owls logo in its hallmarks, beginning in 1931. This bracelet does not bear the owls mark, indicating it was made earlier. Sanborn Hnos {brothers} S.A. is featured in Bille Hougart’s The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks. DIMENSIONS: 5-1/2” inner circumference, plus a 1-1/8” back opening. The cuff is fairly pliable and should fit most wrists. It is 1-1/4” wide all the way around. WEIGHT: 37.5 grams. CONDITION: Excellent to superior vintage condition, with no dents or damage to the silver evident. |
