This is an Antique Candle Snuffer Set. It is made of a white porcelain with hand painted cobalt blue and gold decoration. Flow blue style design. Lovely leaves and shells in the design and the handles of the snuffers are butterflies! I believe this dates from no later than mid-1800s, and probably much earlier.
The condition of the paint is remarkable – almost totally intact. One of the snuffer rests has been broken and repaired long ago. There are no maker’s marks at all, but I believe this is German. Interesting to note are the two air vents on the bottom that were needed to allow the air to escape from the hollow interior during firing. The tray with the two holders measures about 6 3/4 inches by 5 inches. The snuffers are about 2 3/8 inches tall by 1 3/8 inches across. |
