This is a set of drawings on paper depicting traditional dress in Central and Eastern Europe. Drawn and painted by Maria A. Braun (Brown), Austria-Linz, in 1948-1950. Media include pencil and ink drawings, colored with watercolor and/or gouache and colored ink. Each drawing is signed in pencil on the front in a little inset drawing of hills, villages or flowers. Also signed on the backs, always with the name of the region and typically (but not all) with: Made in Austria-Linz / By: M. A. Braun (Brown) / Linz. Telephon: 25-67-43.
The regional dress depicted includes (in no particular order): Tyrol, Austria, Styria, Salzburg, Carinthia, Bavaria, Old Vienna, Hungary and Russia. The sizes vary from is 9 1/4 by 12 1/2 inches to 9 3/4 by 13 inches. These would look great framed, individually or in sets of four. They represent a colorful record of fashion and costume from the 19th century Central and Eastern Europe. I cannot find any information on the artist, Maria Braun. These paintings were done shortly after WW2 in Linz, Austria, possibly as a student project -- either for a fashion designer course, history lesson or art school. Too bad, because these are well executed and show some real talent. Price is for the complete set. |
