This fine American male portrait, circa 1840-1870, resides in a period giltwood frame and is unsigned. The gentleman is seated on an upholstered armchair with floral craved crestrail in the style of the rococo revival period of the mid-19th century. Craquelure is consistent with age, and there are signs of inpainting, plus a couple old, professional restorations to small tears. Stretcher measures 29 x 36 in and the frame measures 37 x 44 x 2 in. This fine green patinated bronze sculpture by Salvatore Melani (French, 1902-1934) depicts a male hunter spearing a charging lion. Measures 37.5" wide, 8.75" deep and 18.5" high. Signed in the cast and set upon a black, grey and green variegated marble plinth. Weighs an estimated 40-60 lbs. Very good condition. There are some modest scrapes and wear to the patina, and the spear has some bends as well.
