| This enormous oil on canvas by Sid Daniels was painted in 1980 and was featured in the 1982 film, Tootsie. Entitled "La Mode", it depicts a female dancer in elegant red dress with exagerrated high heels. It measures 7 ft (84 in, or 213 cm) tall, and 50 in (127 cm) wide. In the film the painting is displayed on a wall in the apartment of Sandy Lester (played by Teri Garr), and appears in two scenes. The first scene occurs thirty minutes into the film when Micheal Dorsey (Dustin Hoffman) arrives three hours late for dinner. Michael sits in front of the painting as they share a pint of chocolate. Most of the painting appears in a later scene when Michael appears to take Sandy out on a date. Daniels studied at the Ontario College of Art from 1970 to 1974, and by 1977 had settled in New York City. Inspired by the vibrant night life and disco scene, his paintings and designs were soon featured in the elaborate window displays at Bloomingdales, Macy's and Marshall Fields. In the late 70s his commissioned murals decorated some of the trendiest restaurants and nightclubs, including Fiorucci and Zanzibar in Manhattan, and Las Paras in Yokahama, Japan. This painting was featured in the movie, Tootsie, and was reproduced as a poster by Grand Image in 2004. Daniels continues to create art in Miami Beach where he moved to in 1997. His self-described and trademarked style, Latin Deco, best sums up his most important artistic influences, namely Art Deco architecture and design, and Latin American culture, particularly music and dance. | |||||||||||||||
