SOLD

This funa dansu, or captains's sea chest, is constructed primarily of zelkova wood and hand forged iron hardware. The swing front door lock has a workable key and the cabinet's interior has 5 drawers/compartments. From the Meiji period, this safe/sea chest has expected wear from it's usage: sharp edges on the iron work, , nicks, worm erosion in 2 of the drawers and the swing door is not completely flush when shut. It was not unsual for funa dansu to have been modified over the years, and it's not certain whether this one is all original or somewhat modified. Additional photos may be viewed at Tokugawa Antiques .com web site.
