This portable ariake andon lantern with its little drawer is also referred to as a bedside lamp or daybreak lamp. It’s wood cover has cut-outs on each side and diffuses the amount of light emitted from the burning candle and/or oil reservoir. There is a top front aperture, a front sliding access window and the shoji paper frame lifts off the tray. Urushi brown lacquer has been applied to the wood cover and wood tray. A bamboo handle completes the charm of this lantern. There are a couple slits or holes in the old shoji paper. It dates from the Meiji period.
