This chunky pup has the artist's mark on the bottom. It's totally appealing with its playful pose and curled tail. It has the big eyes and tipped ears of a chin pup, but it could also be said to be a baby shishi, or lion dog. There's a drilled hole in the bottom of the raised paw so perhaps there was a ball with it originally.

The strength and prowess of the panther is exhibited in this signed bronze. The feline energy is brilliantly communicated throughout the piece from the angle of the head to the weight of the tail. There are a few spots of oxidation on the patina as seen in the last photograph. The included hardwood display stand is original to the piece. It dates from mid-century and has its original (signed) tomobako.

There's something comical about this cat's ferocity. Perhaps it's the size of his feet. The artist captured many feline attributes in the rough clay, and the cat looks ready to stalk his prey. The dark red clay contains flakes of metal (or other material). The maker's mark is on the underside and he has his own box.
