There are a few breaks in the woven bamboo and a couple of the areas have been plugged with an unknown substance. A small area of the rope is frayed but still strong. It's shape is slightly irregular, neither perfectly round nor oblong. Not sure of its original purpose, but possibly a shopkeeper's basket.

A wonderful old wood storage box whose surface was pasted with woodblock prints on each side as well as both sides of the lid. The box's inside and bottom are lined with old rice paper. It appears that the prints were glued down and sealed. but not sealed with multiple layers of varnish as with japanning. Please notice that the lid has the most fading, there are some tears & wrinkles, loss of paper on the corners, and a bug trace in the box's bottom. Perhaps the box originally held tea. The longer sides were photographed with the box upended. A Meiji-Taisho piece.
