SOLD 

Pale and clean kiri wood was used for this fine clothing chest built in three stacking sections. Sliding doors on the upper part are painted with bamboo, blossoms and water. There are two small drawers behind the sliding doors, and three drawers below. The hinged doors open to reveal four shallow drawers in the middle section. The lower section is comprised of three drawers.

Tea cupboard, or chadansu of rich keyaki wood has four sliding doors and two drawers. The upper section has decorative paper panels behind the glass on the doors, and a plain wood interior. The lower section has a small interior cubby with a bowed front, a split-level shelf and paper on the back panel. The paper is water-marked and could be replaced or removed. This mizuya-dansu is smaller than many. It's one-piece and has three sets of sliding doors, one conventional cupboard and six drawers. The aluminum drawer pulls date it to the 1930's. The screens have worn areas and there are some shrinkage cracks in the doors. The doors and drawers slide smoothly and the piece offers good storage space.

This four-panel screen displays arched ranma panels of cedar between bamboo rods. The center sections are of narrow bamboo slats, and the lower panels are hardwood, perhaps buna or mahogany. They're randomly drilled to resemble wormwood. The rods have black patterns stamped on them, and the hinges are mottled as well. It's a very sound screen with some minor breaks in the center bamboo slats. These can be found on close inspection but call no attention to themselves. ...click for details

This pair of chests dates from the Taisho period and has many indications of high quality. Each piece is comprised of three stacking sections. "His" has all drawers below the upper section, and "hers" has a section with sliding shelves or shallow drawers (kimono and obi) and a beveled mirror on the inside of one door. This hibachi has a wooden cover that may serve as a small kotatsu, or frame to support a futon or heavy blanket. The two-piece top is drilled with varying sized holes and is copper-backed. One lower side of the box is removable but the firepan doesn't slide out. There's also a lacquered firepan cover that may not be original to the piece. The varied holes suggest bubbles, giving the piece a cheery demeanor. Dates from Taisho or early Showa era. ...click for details

Here's a nice bamboo and cedar screen in a 48" height. The ranma-style cedar panels have cut-out designs. The frame is also cedar, and fine bamboo slats form the panels. This piece is basically sound but could use some maintenance. The hinges are a bit wobbly and a piece of cedar has broken out of the top of the frame (see picture).
