Container to carry tobacco in the shape of a yawning and stretching Daruma. The body is made of kiri (Paulownia) wood, while the arms and the face, which can be removed and functions as the cover, are made of a light brown, much denser wood. ‘In front of’ Daruma (inlaid in his belly) a sceptre and an alms bowl. The two holes in the top of his head are lined with wooden rings and his fists are holding the cord. Eyes inlaid with black horn or glass. Bottom stamped with number(?). Molded resin ojime. Pipeholden in the shape of a yawning and stretching Ashinaga. Japan, Meiji period, 19th century.
Tonkotsu height: 4.5 inches (11 cm).
Slight traces of usage. Pipeholder with split in bottom. Tonkotsu basically very good condition.

Height: 7/8 inch ; width at top: 15/16 inch (ca. 2.2 x 2.4 cm)
Some minor traces of usage, beautiful patina.

Ivory netsuke of a pregnant woman who is sticks a kogai into her hair, while a midwife a feeling her bulging belly. Signed at bottom: Kikugawa and kao. Ivory, probably marine ivory. Japan, late Meiji period, perhaps Taisho period.
Height: 1.5”; width: 1.75”; depth: 1.25” (3.8 x 4.4 x 3.1 cm).
Excellent condition.

No sale outside the USA possible.

Netsuke in the shape of a peach stone. The stone is carved in two halves. One half is holding a small carving of the figure of Seiobo, the fairy queen, sitting on a hinge so that she can move out of her hiding place. Dark stained wood for the pit, Seiobo in a reddish brown wood, the himotoshi fitted with ivory rings (both slightly damaged). On an inlaid mother-of-pearl plaque is the signature of Kagetoshi. Japan, 19th century.
L of shell ca. 1.75 in. (4.6 cm).
Very good condition.

Ivory manju made of two halves. The upper halve carved with the image of a biwa maker taking a rest, while smoking a pipe. On the lower half two of his tools are engraved. The upper section carved in shishiai-bori, sunken relief. The extremely finely engraved lines stained with dark brown and black. Engraved signature on lower half: Gyokuhosai. Second half 19th century.
Diameter: 1 5/8 in. (4.1 cm).
Excellent condition.
