Set of five black lacquer, circular dishes. Each dish decorated with a plant of the season: flowering plum beside waves, young ferns and grasses, flowering Malvern plant, red maple trees at a hill, and bamboo beside the full moon. All on glossy black lacquer ground, the decoration in shades of gold, silver, red and brown sprinkled lacquer (hiramakie), and with gold powders. Decorations in the style of Ogata Korin. Made for Heiando by Wanyo. Japan, ca. 1985.
Diameter: 6 ˝ inches (16.5 cm).
Perfect condition.

In fitted wooden box, 7 ˝ x 7 ˝ x 4 inches (19 x 19 x 10.2 cm), inscribed on the lid KÔRIN-sai-gahen-maki-e, ichimonji meimei-sara (Dishes individually decorated in KÔRIN style). Signed and sealed inside the lid HEIANDÔ & seal Heiandô, and Wanyo (?) & seal Wanyo.

Set of two tokkuri of bulbous shape, one with slightly everting rim. Light brown stoneware, all sides covered with almost transparent glaze with milky streaks. Unglazed clay under finger- and thumb-marks from dipping into glaze. Both with square seal imprint (unread). Attributed to Matsumoto Hiroyuki. Japan, ca. 1985.
Bottle A: h 4 1/8 in, diameter 2 7/8 in. (10.5 and 7.3 cm); bottle B: h 4 3/8 in. diameter 3 1/8 in. (11 and 7.8 cm).
Perfect condition.

Writing box, or suzuribako, in high gloss black lacquer, decorated with inlay of thin strips and thin pieces of mother-of-pearl. On the cover a heron-like bird is fishing on one leg between flowering iris and water lilies. On the inside of the cover more iris and a butterfly. The inside of the lower section decorated on the outside with carnation. On the inside flowering water lilies and iris. The water dropper in bronze with copper colored patina, in the shape of a carp. Rims of lower part and of cover mounted in silver. Bottom of lower segment signed (signature inlaid in mother-of-pearl and seal mother-of-pearl inlaid into red lacquer: Gazan saku; Gazan. Japan, Taisho period. Ink stick and two brushes (contemporary) included.
Tomobako, signed and sealed on inside of cover: Kimura Gazan saku, red seal: Gazan. Inscribed on the outside in black ink: Gosuzuribako and moriwaka/tojaku (?) moyo raden (design inlaid in mother-of-pearl). 10 5/8 x 9 1/8 x 2 Ľ in. (27 x 23.1 x 5.1 cm)
Excellent condition. Ink stone with traces of usage.

Kimura Gazan was a Taisho period lacquer artist. No further information was found on the artist.

Hanaire, or vase for hanging at wall in tea room, of coarse light brown stone ware, pale translucent glaze. With dark bronze metal hanging-ring and matching wall hook. Lower part unglazed, inside and sides covered with almost transparent glaze. Unglazed clay visible near bottom, where two fingers and thumb held the object while dipping it into the glaze. With square seal imprint (unread). Japan, around 1985.

Small mame-yu. The sturdily built, but very light-weight, wooden base is covered with durable Japanese red lacquer (urushi) suitable for serving hot water (or also soy sauce, or other liquids). The body of this little pitcher is of functional shape and pleasant to handle. Around 1985.
Height 2 3/8 in. (6.2 cm), diameter 3 Ľ in. (8.5 cm), in inscribed cardboard box: Shu-nuri mame-yu (red lacquered miniature pitcher), and with red seal imprint.

Elegant, functional paper knife, reminiscent of Art Nouveau Style. Smoothly carved wood base, covered with Japanese black and red lacquer (urushi), and applied with cracked eggshell. Reminiscent of Art Nouveau Style.
Length 8 15/16 in. (23 cm), width 5/16 in. (0.8 cm), in gray felt sheath. Around 1985.
Perfect condition, as new.
Charles Gauthier studied Japanese Lacquer Art for three years (1979-1981) at the Kyoto City Academy of Fine Arts, Japan.

Set of five circular red dishes, decorated in black lacquer with the flowers of the seasons. The base of thin but strong cypress wood, the wood-grain visible through of top-layer of red lacquer over a base-coat of black lacquer. Each dish decorated with a black lacquer line- drawing of one of the five seasonal plants (Plum, orchids, pine, bamboo, chrysanthemum.) Each dish signed at the underside with a gold lacquer seal ZÔHIKO. Japan, approx. 1985.
Diameter 4 Ľ in. (11 cm).
Perfect condition.
In fitted wooden box (tomobako), 1 3/8” (H) x 5 5/16” x 5 5/16” (3.6 x 13.7 x 13.7 cm), inscribed on the lid and with red seal ZÔHIKO.

Set of five shallow rectangular dishes in wakasa-nuri, a lacquer technique that creates a mottled effect. The base of straight-grained cypress wood covered with black lacquer. Decorated in typical Wakasa style with an irregular pattern of gold foil and shell inlays, ground-down and polished to a glossy, smooth finish. Japan, around 1985.
L 6”, W 4 3/8”, H 9/16” (15.5 x 11.3 x 1.5 cm).
Very slight wear to the black lacquer underside.
