Small mame-yu. The sturdily built, but very light-weight, wooden base is covered with durable Japanese red lacquer (urushi) suitable for serving hot water (or also soy sauce, or other liquids). The body of this little pitcher is of functional shape and pleasant to handle. Around 1985. Height 2 3/8 in. (6.2 cm), diameter 3 ¼ in. (8.5 cm), in inscribed cardboard box: Shu-nuri mame-yu (red lacquered miniature pitcher), and with red seal imprint. Perfect condition, as new. This piece is located in Europe (EC).

The beauty of the natural wood grain is enhanced by a protective layer of transparent Japanese lacquer (tame-nuri), which gives a deep reddish gloss to the surface. Lacquered circular wooden box containing red seal- paste. The wood grain pattern accentuated with gold powder. The natural wood grain accentuated with rubbed-in gold powders, covered with a protective layer of transparent Japanese lacquer (urushi). Signed at the base with an hexagonal seal imprint (unread). Around 1985. Height 1 1/8 in. (3 cm), diameter3 1/8 in. (8 cm), in inscribed and sealed wooden box. Perfect condition, as new. This piece is located in Europe (EC).

Set of five shallow rectangular dishes in wakasa-nuri, a lacquer technique that creates a mottled effect. The base of straight-grained cypress wood covered with black lacquer. Decorated in typical Wakasa style with an irregular pattern of gold foil and shell inlays, ground-down and polished to a glossy, smooth finish. Japan, around 1985. L 6”, W 4 3/8”, H 9/16” (15.5 x 11.3 x 1.5 cm). Very slight wear to the black lacquer underside. These dishes are located in Europe (EC).

Plain keyaki wood (zelkova) with brown finish, decorated in black lacquer with a cricket among susuki grasses. Brown finished wood interiors. Unsigned. Height 2 5/8” (6.7 cm), diameter 2 5/8” (6.7 cm). Purchased in Japan around 1980. Tiny scratch at top, otherwise perfect condition. This piece is located in Europe (EC).
