Large stoneware jar with multi-color dripping glaze over a creamy white crackled glaze. The green is the traditional green of earlier Shigaraki ware, the blue as well, but a variety of brown, red, pink and black have been added to the palette. Inside and bottom covered in brown glaze with yellow spots. Japan, early Showa, 1920-1930s.
Height 17 inches (43.2 cm), diameter at shoulder ca. 17 inches (43.2 cm).
Mint condition.

Storage jar for liquids with pouring spout. The brown stoneware body wrinkled and irregular, the neck shaped by hand with many finger impressions of the potter. The body covered with transparent glaze; on the neck and shoulder a thick splash of transparent glaze, mixed with white, green and brown pigments and some small splashed underneath. In the bottom impressed seal mark in the shape of a double gourd. Probably Karatsu ware. Japan, 18th century.
Comes with wooden storage box that is not original to the piece.
Height 11 1/8 in. (28.2 cm), diameter ca. 9 in. (23 cm).
Two old thin cracks running down from the mouth.

Tea bowl of somewhat irregular shape. Dark brown clay covered in a gray glaze that leaves the lower ¼ of the piece uncovered, the rim and inside covered with a brownish-green glaze. On the outer side a image like a looped line in brownish green covers the gray glaze. A small patch at the inside of the bowl left uncovered. Karatsu ware, Japan, Edo period.
Comes with inscribed tomobako (Egaratsu; chawan, ichiko)and cotton pouch.
H 2.75 inches, diameter 5 inches (6.9 x 12.6 cm).
Small chip in rim repaired in red lacquer.

Hanging scroll with image of Shotoku taishi, a mace in the hands, seated on a low platform underneath a curtain. Part of the mounting is painted to imitate brocade. Black ink and mineral colors on silk. Japan, Muromachi period.
Painting comes with two authentications of the Japan Art Association from 1899. One estimating the piece to be approximately 500 years old. Based on the weave of the silk, the piece should be a little older.
Painted area: 37 1/16 x 15 5/16 inches (94.2 x 38.9 cm); total length 73 ¼ inches (186 cm).
Pigment losses, losses in the silk restored, some creasing due to rolling, stable condition.
Comes with double tomobako.

Scroll painting with the image of the Chinese general Kanu, sitting in a seat, reading a manuscript. Behind him stands his brother in arms Chohi, holding his halberd. Black ink and mineral colors on silk. Signed Eihaku. Two read seals: Eihaku and .. (unread). Dated: Keio, year of the rabbit (1867). Japan, 19th century.
Size, including mounting: height 76 inches, width 19 inches.
Very good condition.
Ex coll. Colonel Samuel Victor Constant
Although nothing much is known about Eihaku, he probably is an artist in the late Kano school line. Late Edo, early Meiji period.

Beautiful and elegant chest for keeping tea utensils. From top to bottom: shelf behind four sliding doors, one curved, wave shaped display shelf and one straight shelf, one curved drawer, two shelf behind two sliding doors each. Doors and drawer fronts made of beautiful mulberry veneer. On the insides and backs of doors and drawers there are left and right marks and numbers in black ink, to indicate the right place for each door. The sides of a wood with coarser grain. Japan, Taisho period.
Height 38 in., width 48 ¼ in., depth 11 ¼ inches.
Some damage (dent, scratches) at sides, due to moving/transport, minor wear shelf edges, one crack in the veneer of one of the doors (stabilized by the back-wood). Overall very good condition and splendid piece.
