Unique impressionistic youga style painting of the Minami-za kabuki theater of Kyoto. A crowd of people strolling in front of the theater. This is a moment in time where a typical Japanese street scene is mixing with Western elements, such as Western dress (or partial western dress) and electricity poles. The painting itself is a mixture of Japanese material (silk, mineral colors, gold wash) and western, impressionistic painting technique. Signed and dated in the upper left corner: Showa 2 (1927), fall, ‘Tenjaku utsutsu kore’ and seal ‘Tenjaku’. Although we are not familiar with the painter, this type of painting fits in the Meiji, Taisho era youga movement.

Painting: H 33 ¾ x W 48 inches
Mounting with wooden scroll ends: H 64 ½ x W 54 ¾ inches.
