Page from an album. Illustration in Chinese style (Chinoiserie) of a Chinese man with high hat, holding two rods (?) in his hands. The shades on his clothes and face done in tiny dots, like in an etching. Black ink and watercolors on Western paper. French or English? Early 19th century. The style of this watercolor refers to the small Chinese paintings on rice paper or extremely fine silk, done in the 18th and 19th centuries. Measurements: 15 ¾ x 11 ¾ inches (40.3 x 30.2 cm). Basically in good condition, fresh colors: left margin with binding holes and slightly folded, upper right corner somewhat damaged, center fold, mounted at upper margin (traces of glue coming through), few thin areas, stains at lower left corner (removable). In mat. |
