Of course it doesn’t seem like that long ago to me that I was like just about everyone else in that I had a regular job with somewhat regular hours in reality that was back in 1999.
After 23 years in the healthcare field I found myself unemployed. It wasn’t long before I had another job for two years and that job had to downsize.
Now completely frustrated and having a harder and harder time finding work and as it would turn out later like so many other folks.
I tried to busy myself and happened to look at a Scroll Saw Magazine in one of our local home improvement centers.
I was totally fascinated by this hobby and thought to myself I can do this!
After all I was one of the first women in my high school to take shop class back when it wasn’t something that women did. I always had a fascination with wood.
So it wasn’t long before I went back to that home improvement center and purchased my first saw. I also had this thought in the back of my mind that perhaps if I got good enough I could sell some of the projects that I made to supplement my unemployment until I found another “real” job.
Well here it is over 2 years later still scrolling and now selling my work on my own website. Still no “real” job in site but my small little business continues to grow, as do I in ways I never thought possible.
I don’t consider this work as it really gives me such pleasure. If this wasn’t enough I get email and letters from people that have shared such personal stories with me on how one of my planter/baskets has helped her poor ailing mother with Alzheimer’s.
This wonderful daughter had purchased the planter of the Schnauzer and turned it into a “Plunder box” filled with old photos and items her mom could pick up. Suddenly her mom started to speak for the first time in a long, long while. I never got that type of inspiration or gratitude from the job I had for 23 years.
So with these thoughts I continue to Scroll Saw and hope that you too find something that inspires you to find your passion within.
