Opinion is divided over the function of these vessels, it is thought that they were used either to fill lamps with oil or to feed liquids to infants. A pottery funerary cone for Merymose, inscribed "Honoured by Osiris, king's son of Kush, Merymose". Merymose was buried in tomb TT383 (Thebes). Egypt, 18th Dynasty, c. 1550-1292 BC Text damaged on one side, base chipped. Size: 11.3 x 7 cms Ex. private collection, London, UK. Purchased in Luxor in 1977 from the authorised dealer Sayed Molattam.

A pottery funerary cone for Neferrenpet, inscribed "The Osiris, Hall-keeper of Amun, wab-priest of Khonsu, Neferrenpet, true of voice by the great god". The imprint of the left hand that held this cone before firing is still retained on the side of the body. Egypt, 18th Dynasty, c. 1550-1292 BC Worn and chipped as seen in the photographs (the text is slightly clearer than shown when viewed with a raking light). A large and extremely fine burnished pottery bowl with flared sides and a flat base. The underside of the vessel is red and the interior has been oxidised to create an even black metallic lustre. Egypt, Pre-Dynastic, Naqada I, c. 4000-3500 BC One ancient stress crack has been stabilised, otherwise intact apart from minor chips. The surface is painted white and additionally painted with a green and red harness details around the neck and head. Egypt, Coptic Period, 5th to 8th Century AD Intact as shown, areas of light surface wear. Size: 9.4 x 10.2 cms Ex. collection: PHDS Wikramaratna, Essex, UK; acquired c. 1950-1990. A terracotta funerary cone moulded with an inscription for "The Osiris, sailor of the first god's servant of Amun, Nebanensu". The cone originates from the tomb of Nebabnensu which is recorded as TT204 in the Valley of the Nobles, Thebes. Egypt, Thebes, 18th Dynasty, 14th or 13th Century BC The base of the cone has been lost, otherwise intact as shown. Size: 8.1 x 8.8 cms Ex. private collection, North Lincolnshire, UK.

SOLD 

A moulded pottery pilgrim flask, each side is moulded in relief with a depiction of Saint Menas flanked by camels and Christian Crosses. Flasks like this were used by pilgrims to carry water or oil home from the great pilgrimage site for Saint Menas, said to be a late third-century Egyptian Roman soldier who was martyred for his Christian faith.
