A button-shaped grey/green stone stamp seal decorated with an abstract pattern. Mesopotamia, 5th or 4th Millennium BC Extensively worn, the suspension hole on the back has almost entirely eroded. Size: 2.7 x 0.9 cms. Ex. Astarte Gallery, London, W1. Acquired 1980's. This item is offered in accordance with international and national laws regulating the trade in Iraqi cultural goods and has been cleared for sale by the British Museum.

A very fine hemispherical seal carved from a piece of translucent amethyst crystal. The seal is decorated with a complex janiform figure consisting of the conjoined and inverted fore-parts of a lion and a winged griffin. When the seal is turned upside down, the front-parts of one animal become the rear-parts of the other. Achaemenid, c. 4th Century BC Intact Size: 1.2 x 0.75 cms Ex. private collection, Winchester, UK. Acquired mid 20th Century.

A stamp seal carved from chalcedony or milky agate. The seal is decorated with a stylised bird facing the ground, but when the seal is rotated 90 degrees, the figure takes on the appearance of a standing draped man. Iran, Sassanian, c. 5th Century AD Size: 2 x 1.2 cms. Very small chip from the edge of the seal, otherwise intact. Ex. private collection, Winchester, UK. Acquired during the 1970's or 1980's.
