Colourful Japanese lacquerware natsume (tea container used in the tea ceremony) from the 1950s or 60s, inlaid with mother-of-pearl.
The lacquer part is done in very bright colours (red, yellow, blue and green); the intricate mother-of-pearl decoration depicts fish (on the container itself) as well as deer and birds (on the lid). The maker's name ('Useki saku' - made by Useki - is scratched into the bottom). Diameter 6.5 cm (2.5"), height 7 cm (3"), excellent state. |
