Satsuma teapot from the late Meiji period (early 20th century). This is a wonderful example of so-called 'dragonware': The spout is the dragon's head; the handle is the tail (including two legs with claws). The finial is a shishi (a mythical oriental lion-dog).
The pot is decorated with a scene of samurai (some on horseback) fighting in front of a moated castle. It also bears two examples of the 'Shimazu mon', the crest of the Shimazu family, the rulers of Satsuma around the end of the 19th century. The underside is marked 'Satsuma-yaki' in Japanese kanji characters. Length from handle to spout 24 cm (9.5"), height 20 cm (8"). There is a little bit of unavoidable damage to the spout (see last picture), but otherwise this pot is in absolutely perfect condition. |
