This is a Hirado plate shaped (and painted) like a fish, scales and all. Of course, there are hardly any natural species of fish coloured in this vivid blue.
The plate is about 100 years old, which dates it to the late Meiji period (probably between 1890 and 1910). It is marked "Dai Men manreki nen sei" in underglaze blue - a spurious Chinese Wanli reign mark. Dimensions 25 x 17 cm, perfect state. |
