Cornelia De Gavere Portrait
SOLD!!
Cor De Gavere 1877-1955, Oil on Canvas 24" X 30" signed lower right in. Painter. Born in Java, Indonesia of Dutch parents on Jan. 25, 1877. Cornelia was orphaned at age six and went to live with an uncle in Holland. She later studied at the Royal Academy of Art in the Hague and in 1914 began three years of study in Paris in the atelier of Charles Guerin. During this time, instead of the deep, rich browns and light greys typical of her earlier palette, she began experimenting with brighter colors (blues, yellows, reds, whites). During WWI she put her art aside to join the Red Cross. To be near her brother in California, in 1920 she immigrated to Santa Cruz where she worked as a librarian. Cor de Gavere, Margaret Rogers, and Leonora Penniman were known as The Santa Cruz Three. They exhibited their works throughout California and were among the founders of the Santa Cruz Art League. De Gavere also wrote poetry, played music, and was active in local theater. While visiting relatives in the Hague, she died there on June 25, 1955. Her oeuvre includes still lifes and landscapes of the Sierra Nevada and Santa Cruz area. Member: West Coast Arts; Berkeley Art League; Bay Region AA.
