This high quality painting depicts beautiful portrait of Russian hussar on horse by well listed French painter Horace Vernet (1789-1863). Horace Vernet is listed in the major art references and is highly collectable today. H.Vernet lived and worked in Russia for several years.
The son and grandson, respectively, of two well-known painters, Carle Vernet and Joseph Vernet, Horace developed a remarkable facility for working on a grand scale and became one of France's most important military painters. A Bonapartist, he specialized in glorifying the Napoleonic era. During the restoration of the monarchy after 1815, his studio was a centre of political intrigue as well as a meeting place for sportsmen, artists, and writers. A period with the French Army in Algiers (1833) inspired some paintings of the Arab world. He was subsequently commissioned by Louis-Philippe and Napoleon III to produce the battle pieces at Versailles. The painting is gouache and watercolor on board, signed and dated bottom left. You can see Russian double-headed eagle on Hussar bag. Size of the painting is 12”x 8”1/4', with the frame 18”1/2'x 15”. The painting is in good untouched condition.
