A fascinating E-seto chawan (decorated Seto tea bowl) by a potter named Kato Shungyo, dating from the end of the Edo period (1615-1868).

The underglaze markings, indecipherable characters and misty drawings of houses, add some mystery to this chalice, which presents a finely crackled glaze over a wonderfully well balanced asymmetrical body.

The chawan is in very good condition. It is signed and bears the seal of its maker...

A superb chawan (tea bowl) by Kato Shuntei II (1927-1995). The vessel got dressed in black when it was taken out of the kiln during the firing and suddenly plunged in water (hiki-dashi technique), much like it is done will raku and seto-guro bowls. The result is a wonderful pitch black robe that offers enchanting contrasts when used to drink green tea.

The master potter inherited the name of his father in 1961...

This powerful piece is a seated Colima warrior that dates to the Protoclassic Period, circa 100 B.C.-250 A.D., and is approximately 14 inches high. This Mariner's Compass quilt is exquisitely pieced and quilted. The points of the compasses are as sharp as one would hope. The body of the quilt is elaborately stitched with swirling feather patterns throughout. The border is quilted with diagonal lines. The quilt has been professionally laundered and is in pristine condition. Measurements are 71" x 102". Probably made circa 1890 but possibly as late as 1910. The solid color fabrics are more difficult to date than prints.
