19th century staghorn ojime (slide bead for tightening the cord going from netsuke to inro) carved in a clam shell. Good design, shunga connotation as almost inevitable with clam in Japanese art, nice patina on the surface, natural imperfections in staghorn, overall in very good condition. Length 11/16 inches.

It was not uncommon for blue & white porcelains arriving from the Far East to be applied with enamels to suit the new fashion for coloured wares. The entailed the vessels being fired again but at a much lower temperature. This Dutch production was colloquially known as “Amsterdams Bont”.

The blue & white design on the Arita jar is in Chinese Transitional style.

Approximately 25.3 cm high. As often with these wares there is some crazing to the glaze towards the bottom....

The stone has a lustrous patina and has a very dramatic ‘splash’ of red on both sides. It has never been carved with a designation and the base has now a shallow flake as a result of an impact on the edge, with a little powdery material showing. Further along there is a tiny bruise to the edge. These could be taken out by reducing the length by 0.4cm. Personally the chip does not worry me. In this example the red is really very strong, like a fashionable lipstick.
