Startled to enlightenment, this is a large Edo period figure of a Rakan (Sanskrit: Arhat), a Buddhist saint kozutsucarved in the Yosegi-zaiku method of joined blocks of wood. Originally covered in polychrome colors, much has grayed and flaked away with time, a fitting aspect of the image. He has glass eyes which seem to burn violently with realization. Winthrop sterling silver tray. Made by Tiffany & Co. in New York, ca 1923. Round well with patera comprising beaded rondel (vacant) radiating leaf-and-dart. Shoulder flat and tapering with laurel wreaths inset with flower heads. Ornament acid-etched. A great piece in the historic Regency Revival pattern. Pair of German 800 silver figural bird bowl, ca 1920. Each: Swan with ovoid body, upturned tail, and scaly-s-scroll neck terminating in in closed bill. Imbricated feathers and hinged plumy wings that can be opened to suggest flight. Hollow gilt-washed interior for holding treats. German marks including Hanau maker’s stamp (Gebrüder Neumann) and American importer’s stamp (Buchholz & Zelt). Very good condition.

During Qing Dynasty silver figures of traditional mythical characters were sewn onto hats for decoration. A powerful image of Padmasambhava also known as Guru Rimpoche, the reputed founder of Tibetan Buddhism. Carved mostly of a single piece of precious dark purple sandalwood (zitan). Remains of colours and gold. Tibet, 17–18th cent. H 15 cm. Condition: Very good but of course with wear due to age. The trident (khatvanga) is missing.

A rare, Chinese, lacquer box from the Western Han dynasty.
